Mortgage article 22:January Figures Show Seasonal Fall in Lending

Gross mortgage lending fell to £13 billion in January from £13.6 billion the previous month, according to
figures from the monthly CML/DTLR Survey of Mortgage Lenders, based on mortgage completions from both banks
and building societies. But despite the usual post-Christmas decline in activity, gross lending was still
well above last January's total of £9.5 billion, thanks mainly to the strength of remortgaging.
Loans for house purchase totalled £6.4 billion last month, compared with £8.5 billion in December and £5.4
billion in January last year. Remortgaging increased to £5.4 billion, compared with £4.2 billion in the
preceding month and £3.6 billion a year ago. Next
